The court has sought to know from the state what steps it has taken to curb illegal pet shops.S.The Bombay high court on Friday observed that poaching of animals would not stop until the illegal sale of these birds and animals is stopped..The bench said that after the affidavit is filed by the state, the government officials concerned would be sent to see where these animals can be kept if the shops are found to be running illegally. However, the bench did not allow their application, saying if they are not doing illegal business then they need not to worry and if the business is illegal, then action would be taken.The division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice M. Sonak was hearing a PIL filed by Sanjay Shirke alleging that exotic birds and animals are being sold illegally in pet shops at Crawford Market.

During the hearing the Pet Shop Owner’s Association filed an application seeking to intervene in the petition, saying their business would be affected. The court also sought to know details of NGOs that care for these animals because there are chances that they would be harmed or killed by other animals if they are freed.Petitioner’s lawyers Sanjukta Dey and Abhishek Yende alleged that the condition in which these animals and birds are kept is barbaric.The bench sought to know from the government if selling of exotic birds and animals is legal and if not, then what action has been taken against the seller.
